Skeletons in the Basement — A Mystery Uncovered in Amherst

Halloween decorations would not be complete without the jovial grin of a skeleton. Many spooky late night tales include ghosts in the attic and skeletons in the basement. There is just something fascinating about the human skeleton and the mysteries of the afterlife. This is a perfect time of year to share a true story about skeletons. In a tale reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew, or Scooby Doo, the town of Amherst has a mystery that includes skeletons in the basement. Amherst is a historic Colonial town dating back to the early 1700's. In 2003, a most gruesome discovery brought the much needed renovations of the town hall to a complete stop. A skull and part of a well preserved skeleton was discovered under a corner of the foundation by the construction crew. As required by state law, the office of the coroner was called. Scientists would be the ones to help solve this mystery. Archaeologists, Kathleen Wheeler Ph.D. and Alexandra Chan Ph.D., from Portsmouth determined the bones belonged to an adult female between the age of 20 and 29 with African morphological characteristics, and a young child around the age of 3-5 years of age. Both appeared to ...

Lisa Snow Wade of Orr & Reno

We selected eight of the best lawyers from around the state for portraits and asked them to share a favorite quotation and to tell us why they love what they do. These profiles appeared along with Woodward/White's annual Best Lawyers in America list, as published in our November issue. “Just because you can doesn't mean you should.” — Sherrilyn Kenyon “My educational background was in engineering, and I approach legal problems the same way I would an engineering problem. Understand the legal principles that govern the situation, know your client's business or dispute, develop a theme or strategy to address the problem or to build a case if litigation is inevitable or filed, then build the solution or case around that central theme. It saves time and money by not wasting the client's resources on issues not relevant to the case, and promotes early resolution by identifying strengths and weaknesses in the client's position. I seek to advise clients on good risk management strategies before the threat of litigation or an administrative enforcement action arises, but I am ready to represent them in litigation just in case they do.” Orr & Reno 45 S. Aimée Caruso of Seacoast Mother Nurture is a Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based Massage Therapist who has been specializing in the art of massage since 2003. Let’s learn more! Aimée is over the moon to focus in on her niche of working with women for relaxation and pain relief, maternity to postpartum and beyond. Her techniques are designed to calm the mind and body, and her massages can be described as soothing and renewing. I was excited yet apprehensive about being a new mom. I learned so much about this incredible ever-changing vessel that was my body and the little human I was majestically growing inside. This really empowered my love for working with women young ...

Giving (overdue) Thanks

I'm thankful for the Granite State with its bounty of lakes and mountains, and its precious sliver of coastline. It only took me half a century to realize it. In his final Editor's Note for New Hampshire Magazine, Rick Broussard recalled his Louisiana roots and how he spent the next three decades touting the wonders of his adopted state. My story couldn't be more different. When I came of age, all I wanted to do was live somewhere else. Cue The Animals: “We gotta get out of this place. If it's the last thing we ever do.” It wasn't New Hampshire's fault — blame it on youthful rebellion, the circumstances of my upbringing and the gritty city I called home. Raised by a single mom taking care of four kids, I seldom had the chance to experience the New Hampshire that local chambers of commerce touted to visitors. We didn't have a car for most of my childhood. I navigated the world on buses and bikes. Little red school houses nestled in the woods was not the New Hampshire I knew. Only when uncles and aunts and cousins came to town did my siblings and I experience White Lake and ...

Wildlife Rehabilitation

Kiley Cruse, SCA Field Crew Member Photo taken by the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah. What is Wildlife Rehabilitation? Wildlife rehabilitation is the treatment and care of injured, orphaned, or sick wild animals with the intent to release them back to the wild. On occasion the rescued animal will be unable to be released, in these cases the licensed wildlife rehabilitator will keep and care for the animal. These instances include but are not limited to, animals that have lost a limb, loss of any critical senses, albinism, or severe burn injuries. Millstone Wildlife Center displays their non-releasable fox named Finnegan. Does This Animal Need My Help? Wild animals are often fine and won’t need intervention. This is true even if you’ve found a young animal that appears to be orphaned. Typically their parents are close by and check in on their young periodically, so taking that baby animal may be disrupting a normal part of nature. The only time when it is appropriate to intervene with a young animal is if there are obvious signs of injury or sickness. The reason it’s important to avoid removing animals from nature unless absolutely necessary is because when they are later ...

New Hampshire State Symbols

David Bailey, SCA Interpretive Ranger A state symbol can hold great meaning to a state. Many of them are chosen because they represent unusual and interesting items found within the state. New Hampshire is no different. As an Interpretive Ranger one of my more popular programs involve talking about some of these symbols. Here are some of my favorites to talk about. Red Spotted Newt Red Eft. Photo by Eilís Donohue 2019 SCA Interpretive Ranger Red-Spotted Newt. Photo by Eilís Donohue 2019 SCA Interpretive Ranger New England is home to four subspecies of the Eastern Newt; the Red-Spotted Newt, the Broken-Striped Newt, the Central Newt, and the Peninsula Newt. The Red-Spotted Newt is the only Newt commonly found in New Hampshire. The Eastern Newt has three stages to life. The first an aquatic larval stage. When the newt hatches for the egg sack it has a yellowish-brown, olive or brown skin. It also has gills and a laterally flattened tail. For the Red Spotted Newt this takes places mostly in vernal pools or seasonal pools that fill with snow melt every spring. The second stage for the eastern newt is the red eft. The newt will lose its gills and ...
