The Northern Rail Trail Nominated for Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s National Hall of Fame

Fans of the Northern Rail Trail urged to support the rail-trail during a public voting period

North Central New Hampshire: The Northern Rail Trail has been nominated as a candidate for induction this year into Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s (RTC) Hall of Fame.

Rail-Trail Hall of Fame nominees are selected based on merits such as scenic value, high use, trailside amenities, historical significance, management and community connections. In a public voting period, the Northern Rail Trail will compete against two other rail trails to be the 2021 Hall of Fame inductee during the public voting period, which runs from July 30 – August 6. The winner will be officially announced later this summer.

“The Northern Rail Trail has been a lifesaver for our community before and during the Covid 19 pandemic, offering safe, fun, easily accessible recreation for our whole family,” said members of the McCarthy family in Wilmot, NH.

“While we’ve always known how important trails are to communities nationwide, this past year has proven the immeasurable impact they deliver to our health, well-being and the social fabric of the places where we live, work and play,” said Brandi Horton, RTC’s vice president of communications. “This year’s nominees for the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame embody the attributes of great trails, which are essential to healthy, thriving communities. We wish each trail good luck!”

RTC began recognizing rail-trails with Hall of Fame status in 2007. If selected, the Northern Rail Trail would join the decorated list of more than 30 other Hall of Fame trails.
More information about the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame can be found on RTC’s website.

The Northern Rail Trail is 59 miles of resurfaced rail trail extending from just north of Concord to Lebanon through scenic New Hampshire for year round use by walkers, bikers, horseback riders, mobility assisted users, dog walkers, and snowmobilers & cross country skiers in winter.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is the nation’s largest trails organization—with a grassroots community more than 1 million strong—dedicated to building a nation connected by trails, reimagining public spaces to create safe ways for everyone to walk, bike and be active outdoors.
