Tell Me on a Sunday Opens Wednesday

Our season continues with the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black musical Tell Me on a Sunday starring NH Theatre Award Winner Ashley Meeken, beginning July 28th on the indoor stage.

Though Andrew Lloyd Webber is mostly known for large spectacles like Phantom of the Opera and Starlight Express, this one-woman musical, written in the early 1980s, is a more intimate show. It was originally performed in England where songs like “Take that Look off Your Face” and “Unexpected Song” became chart-topping pop hits, and the album reached #2. The one-act show was then combined with a ballet piece to form the musical Song and Dance which came to Broadway in 1985, earning eight Tony Award nominations, and starring Bernadette Peters in the role for which she would win her first Tony Award.

More recently the show has gone back to its one-act roots and has been performed by countless talented performers all over the world. In this day of online video auditions, we could have cast this musical with an actor from anywhere in the country. Instead, we knew the perfect performer was literally in our backyard. Producing Artistic Director Neil Pankhurst, says, “Ashley Meeken was our first choice for the role and we were thrilled when she said yes.” The Lakes Region native is known throughout the area for her top-notch dance and singing skills which earned her a New Hampshire Theatre Award for her performance as Velma Kelly for our 2019 production of Chicago. In February 2020, she agreed to take on a small, heartbreaking role in the Education Department’s production of The Wolves.

In Tell Me on a Sunday, Ashley’s singing and acting skills are on full display as she sings the ups and downs of the romantic relationships of a young English woman who arrives in America full of aspirations for her love life and career. Her relationships will take her from New York to Los Angeles and back again as she searches for the perfect mate.

The production is directed by Tracey D. Turner, who made her Playhouse debut in the cast of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner in 2019. Meredith C Brown designed the two-level set and Graham Edmondson, who also won a NH Theatre Award for Chicago, provided the lighting design. The 1980s-inspired costumes are designed by Lesley Pankhurst. Matthew Stephens and Judy Hayward co-music directed and Hayward will lead the six-piece live band.

The production runs from July 28th through August 14th.
